A/N: I don't know if I am the first to bring this subject up. But it does seem unlikely to me that Vulcan eyes would be well adapted to seeing clearly through water or fog.

(Warning: This chapter contains a scene of violence with adult subject matter. Most of this story is fairly tame, actually, despite being set in the Mirror Universe. However this chapter addresses some adult issues including sex and domestic violence. The people of the Mirror Universe are not the same as the characters in the RU. Think of them as identical twins, who have been raised by different parents under completely different conditions. Life is hard where they live, and some of them are not very nice people. You have been warned.)

Chapter 14:

The smoke was noxious with the stench of smoldering insulation, burning lubricant, and scorched blood from beings that used iron, copper, manganese, and several other minerals for oxygen binding. The ceiling of the bunker had caved in across two thirds of the area, and bodies in various degrees of dismemberment were strewn over consoles and sprawled across the floor. Soft shadows drew a merciful veil over the scene, as the only light came from the few scattered emergency lamps that had not been shattered by the torpedo blasts.

Chapter 13:

T’Pol drew herself upward with her left arm until her face pressed firmly against the top of the cage. Her right arm, torso, and both legs hung straight downward in a perfect vertical line. She held still for exactly thirty seconds, and then allowed her arm to straighten slowly. Switching hands, she repeated the movement with her right arm and held it for another thirty seconds. Then she allowed her arm to straighten and finally dropped the few centimeters to the deck.

To her intense disgust, her shoulders were registering sensations of fatigue. Slight, but quite noticeable. Two hundred repetitions of a one armed pull-up should have been effortless for her, especially under Terran gravity. She had certainly permitted herself to deteriorate into a shameful state. This was unacceptable, and rectifying the situation took top priority.

Summary: Daniel and T’Riss explore the ramifications of Human/Vulcan relations aboard the Lerteiran, Jonathan Archer deals with his own deficits in interpersonal skills and, on the Sehlat, Senek and Raijiin offer Damin a job.

____________________________________________________________________________

"Does everyone in the quadrant know about the Romulans being ex-Vulcans except us?” demanded Daniel as he sat at tactical on the bridge of the Lertieran.“The Orions have to know it. They do business with the Romulans. And the Klingons are right next door to them. If the Klingons don't know they’re blind. Only Vulcan's closest allies aren't allowed to know things like this, I guess.”

At the co-pilot’s station, T'Riss turned her head away, at a loss to explain Daniel’s sudden anger. After their conversation the previous evening, she’d thought that they were beginning to establish a rapport. Now she was wary of even looking at him, he seemed so volatile. It was understandable that he would feel threatened by not having complete information about a potential enemy, she supposed, but he was acting as if the revelation of the Romulans’ kinship to Vulcan were a personal betrayal.

Thoughtful silence reigned in the control room for a while. Then Daniel shook his head and keyed several commands. “Sehlat has gone to warp.” He paused. “Now, Enterprise.”

"All hands and passengers brace for warp,” Jenrali announced over the com. After his last unannounced set of maneuvers three of the eight remaining paying passengers had demanded a transfer to the Sehlat, a refund of their fares, and reimbursement for their medical bills, leaving Lertieran with only five of fourteen available passenger berths occupied.Bringing finances into the picture had made the captain slightly more conscientious of the welfare of others.

Nevertheless, by sheer conditioned reflex Daniel and Sehlra grabbed for the nearest solid anchors and held on with death grips that weren't really necessary anymore. Daniel had recently informed T’Riss that, after all the retrofitting and engine tuning lately, Lerteiran no longer fell into warp “like a watermelon dropped onto a sidewalk”. Now, she slidinto warp “with the smooth grace of a walrus wallowing its way into the surf”. He, at least, was of the opinion that this was a tremendous improvement.

Description: This is an afterthought to my series "The Road Once Traveled". In that series, I initiated a situation in which Trip volunteers to act as matchmaker between Anna Hess and Kov, the V'Tosh Katur aboard the Vahklas that he befriended in Season 1. This stand-alone short story is intended to tie up that loose end and show how things worked out.

--------------------------

Anna Hess came out of the shower in a robe, toweling off her hair. The message indicator on her terminal was flashing and she grinned. “Maybe, finally.” She hurried over to the seat and pulled up her inbox. “Yes!” He had finally answered. She took a deep breath and held it for a moment. Then she selected the message from Kov and sat back to hear his response to her letter.

Upside down logic

There is a basic principle in christian theology. Theologists describe this by saying, "We are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners." This seems pretty simple and straightforward to me. I mean, think about it for a moment.

When my children got old enough to start asking, "Daddy, why do people do bad things?" I told them that everyone is born wild, just like a fox, or a deer, or a wolf. We are not domesticated animals. We are still feral. As we grow up, we have to tame each other. The process of taming is called civilizing. It is what parents and society are supposed to do with a child when they teach it right and wrong,. But sometimes, they don't get the job done right, so the person grows up still part-wild. And they act like a wild animal because they still ARE part wild animal.

My kids nodded and went on their way. It seemed that a three or four year old had no trouble grasping this concept. So why do so many supposedly rational adults, particularly politicians, seem blind to it?
